Psychiatry evaluation and treatment
At South Florida Psychiatry, we are proud to offer psychiatric evaluations and treatment. Our highly trained team of caring doctors and staff are here to help you understand and manage what’s troubling you.
During a psychiatric evaluation, you may be asked a wide range of questions so that your doctor can begin to understand how your past and present are affecting your current behaviors and state of mind. Both physical and psychiatric symptoms will be discussed so that your doctor can assess their effects on things such as work, school, relationships, and family. Your personal and family history of emotional, behavioral, and developmental disorders may be discussed, as well.
Once your doctor has had a chance to evaluate your responses thoroughly, they will be able to make a diagnosis and offer suggestions for treatment. Treatment may involve therapy, medication, or a combination of solutions explicitly designed around what will work best for you.
Psychiatrists are specially trained in the treatment of psychiatric and behavioral disorders through the use of medication. If your doctor feels that a particular drug may help you, he or she will prescribe something after they’ve had an opportunity to understand all the facets of your specific medical condition.

Psychiatry medications management
Perhaps it’s a medication that was prescribed to you by a previous doctor, or a new medication prescribed by a doctor here at South Florida Psychiatry. Whatever the case may be, we will gladly discuss your current medications and any medications you’ve previously taken. This information will aid your doctor in offering the best possible solution for your medical condition.
Sometimes a medication ceases to be as effective as it was when you began it, or the side effects become unpleasant and unbearable. We understand it can sometimes be a trial and error process, and pride ourselves on finding the right dose of the right medication for you if medication is needed.
Your input is an essential part of this process. We value your thoughts and feelings regarding taking medication and the impact it will have on your life and activities. Your doctor will discuss any new prescriptions or adjustments so that you understand precisely what the medicine is for and what side effects you may experience. Our ultimate goal is to help you feel your best self, and you help us achieve this when you take an active role in your treatment.

Solution-Focused Therapy
Solution-focused therapy is a form of psychotherapy that focuses on a person’s present and future circumstances rather than their past experiences. In this goal-oriented therapy, patients are encouraged to develop a vision of their future instead of targeting the symptoms or issues that may bring a person into therapy.
During sessions, patients are encouraged to make changes and move forward with their desired vision of one’s future. We strive to help patients identify and develop their strengths and tools necessary to make the change.
In therapy, we attempt to guide patients to see what is working for them and how to acknowledge and celebrate their steps toward success. By finding solutions to their problems, the patient can spend less time in therapy and more time moving to their desired future.
Treatment is typically short-term, and we offer sessions for individuals, couples, and families.

Group Psychotherapy
Group psychotherapy can be a particularly powerful and effective treatment option for treating a variety of mental health conditions. Group therapy can be for a specific condition or problem or more generally focused on helping to improve social skills or process difficult situations such as social anxiety or the loss of a loved one.
During sessions, one or more psychologists may lead a group of patients who meet throughout the week. Some patients may attend individual therapy as well while others may only participate in group groups.
There are a few things to consider when choosing a group such as if you want an open or closed group or the size of the group you feel comfortable with. An open group means new members can join at any time, while closed group members are determined before sessions begin. The size of the group can be important as small groups offer more time to focus on each individual but larger groups may offer greater diversity and more perspectives.

The Benefits of Group Therapy
Though joining group therapy may sound intimidating, group therapy can provide certain benefits that individual therapy cannot.
Group therapy can act as a support network and sounding board for support, advice, and help through changes. Regularly talking to others can help you to feel as though you aren’t alone and offer new ways to put your situation or condition into perspective in a safe space. Being in a group can also open you to diversity and see positive changes in areas you might have missed on your own. Group members can actively grow, develop, and learn as they engage in the group process.

ADHD & Learning Disabilities Assessment and Treatment
A learning disability is a condition that affects how a person receives and processes information. There are many different kinds of learning disabilities and can affect a person’s ability to recall and organize information and ability to read, write, spell, and comprehend math as well as impact short-term and long-term memory.
Though attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is not a learning disability, it can make learning difficult. It can be difficult to learn when you struggle to pay attention and focus on certain tasks. Both ADHD and learning disabilities can affect important executive functions of the brain with tasks that can be outside of a classroom setting.
It is possible for patients to have both a learning disability and ADHD but can be difficult to diagnose or recognize as some symptoms can be shared. If you or your loved one is on medication for ADHD, the learning disability will persist and if you only treat the learning disability, it may still be difficult to focus and prevent impulsivity.
At South Florida Psychiatry, we have state-of-the-art technology to identify the root cause of the patient’s challenges to make a customized treatment plan that suits an individual’s needs and goals. We believe the best way to treat and manage learning disabilities or disorders is to address the condition directly instead of simply eliminating the symptoms.
Our comprehensive exam includes sensory, physical, and cognitive activities to determine areas of development that may need strengthening. These areas may include your ability to focus, interact with others, manage stress, memory, auditory skills, visual processing, hand-eye coordination, and balance.
Following the assessment, we will work together with you to create a detailed plan catered to your results and needs to strengthen and build brain connectivity. Our treatment may include sensory-motor training, academic activities, nutrition plans, and at-home exercises.
